So my story continues after getting on a plane from Dubai and heading to Lusaka. I’m halfway complete my journey to site in to northwest province of Zambia. I will arrive in Lusaka, and catch a  puddle jumper to the small town where the smelter is located.

The airport and the mine are on different sides of the town, so the shuttle drives through town to deliver us to our accommodations on the mine lease. This is my first trip to Africa and is quite the reality check. Dirty roads, people walking along the street carrying items on their heads, tons of markets and overall a sense of poverty. I am imagining this is going to be quite the experience for me.

We arrive at our accommodations. We are situated in the middle of a game reserve on the mine lease. I will spend the next 8 weeks living, eating and sleeping at this small makeshift community with the other expats. There is a benefit though, we are on a game reserve…

A game reserve is an area of land protected that has many animals on it. Its fairly large, you need a vehicle to see the whole site. One of the guys is generous enough to take me out to see wildlife. Some of the animals include giraffe, waterbuck, wildebeest, eland, impala, warthog, zebra and many other species I don’t recognize. There’s animals everywhere. It’s like a real life Animal Planet channel…
